I am not on my Surface right now, so maybe someone can double check, but I believe you can turn off auto correct in the Windows charms settings. In the AutoCorrect opitons section, click the AutoCorrect Options button. Click Proofing in the list of items on the left side of the Word Options dialog box. On the backstage screen, click Options in the list of items on the left. The on-screen keyboard is set to capitalize the first letter of each sentence by default, regardless of whether you want it to or not. To disable the capitalization autocorrect, click the File tab.
